Just a heads-up. There is an annual challenge over on the musicradar forum to build or mod a guitar for under £100. I shall be blogging my own entry here, and anyone who fancies it is more than welcome to join me!

http://www.musicradar.com/forum/showthread.php?t=100559

The Rules:
-Everything you buy has to be included in cost
-Anything you take off a donor guitar & sell can be recouped
-Postage costs are not included, nor are tools & disposables (sandpaper, etc)
-Anything you already have "in stock" must be counted at reasonable market value
-Anything given to you is allowed for free, you lucky buggers

And here's my donor for this year. It needs a MINIMUM of new wiring and trem. Ideally it'll also get a maple neck, new scratchplate & new pickups too. Not to mention a new finish, potentially. God help me...

Someone seems to have dropped their pizza onto it! Just kidding, and good luck with the contest SF.

tbh it looks better in photos than real life..!

I'm considering completely stripping it, but I have no idea what the wood looks like underneath! :s

Beware of the finish-stripping idea, I made that mistake a while ago with a guitar - a lot of more recent Guitars have a polyester finish - this stuff is impervious to even powerful paint finishes, and gives off very nasty fumes if you try to use a heat gun. And depending on the guitar, you may indeed be dissapointed by what you find underneath - I was! the body appeared to be something like 6 pieces of wood, with veneers of some sort of rubbish soft wood top and bottom, presumably to help give a smooth surface for finishing over. A nightmare really, a lot easier starting with a fresh guitar body frankly.

This is just my experience with one guitar, but think carefully is all I'm saying!

I'm aware of the foibles! This one is not a regular guitar finish- rather than lacquer or a hard poly finish it looks like "normal" paint. Nothing a lot of sanding won't sort out.

I might have a go in the trem cavity and see how it looks underneath, at least find out if it's chip/ply or proper wood!

Update!

I have a new neck. From a Tanglewood Signature series, it's a lovely piece of maple with a slight V profile at the first few frets. Might strip it and spray a hint of nitro, but we'll see- that's certainly not a priority at this stage.

A new axesrus bridge is on order for my main strat, so the old Squier unit from that will be moving to this.

Pickup-wise I'm going Ironstone Silvers after recommendations on here. I'm hoping to get close to the Gilmour black strat both sonically and visually. Under all that red and white paint seems to be an original, dark finish (hopefully black!), but I haven't worked up the courage to strip it properly and find out...

My balance sheet for this year is already a lot more complex than last. I came in well under £100 with relative ease, but I'm much more ambitious this time...

I'll keep updating as it goes on

I wish I could do this challenge...but zero money.
Looks like a good project.
A bit of a stone roses vibe with the old jackson pollock motif.
Your strat will look a bit like my old Tokai then? I love the blackout strats.
What are you doing with the old neck? \:\)

I'm going through a silly stage of trying out body ideas. Basically rethinking materials for bodies, the obvious one is old chopping blocks, but then there's biscuit tins (for a resonator sound), plastic moulded cases...in fact anything that you can stick a block of wood through and screw some pickups to. I will create something that sounds great...eventually.
After my bass build...nearly finished, will post pics (quite pleased so far)....
My next job is an acoustic upon which I am painting about 100 penguins...can't wait.
Then a friend wanted me to make his old tanglewood look like a Buck owens (red, white and blue).
Finally, by the end of the year I want to have a crack at the fibre-glass body moulding...a la airline/eastwood. Plus more custom artwork.

Have you thought about a relic or road worn finish? Would look nice on a black strat. Or chrome pickup covers and knobs.
I shall watch with interest sticky.
Good luck.

The Gilmour black strat idea sounds great to me - if you can get that guitar nailed for less than £100 that will be impressive. Somehow I think you can do it though!
