The old neck and hardware are getting sold - anything sold can be recouped into the budget - that's the only way I can get it near £100!

If I can get the paint off and find a black finish underneath I'll buff that up and be on budget. If not I'll have to strip the lot and respray. It's going to be tight for the £100, and a lot of work, but hopefully it'll be worth it

PS- anyone want to buy a rosewood-board neck? Splattery finish could easily be stripped from the headstock ;\)

How much for the neck... I really shouldn't tho (have two sitting here ready for projects).

I'm averaging £50 for paint, filler and clear coat per guitar I finish. So that would take loads out of your budget.

I've experimented with other paint brands...weirdly halfords standard black gloss is a better finish (and much tougher) than the Manchester guitar (proper) paint!? You can also get great graffiti spray paint from Monster, that will withstand extreme conditions, look fantastic and cost less than most nitro sprays. Might be worth trying something unconventional with this strat...could save loads?

Mind you, if you relic the strat, you could use less paint/clearcoat.

Sorry, I'm getting all excited on your behalf. this GAS and building stuff is truely contagious!

No worries with excitement! I know the feeling ;\)

If the body needs finish it'll be either MGT nitro cans or a very dark stain with truoil. Whatever it is I'll have to go up to see my parents and borrow their garden on a nice day (major problem with living in a posh London flat- nowhere to do the messy stuff!)

Re the neck I'd be happy to let it go for £20 as is, or £25 with tuners if you wanted it. The back has been refinned at some point, no idea what with but it's a lovely satin feel. It has a couple of runs that suggest an amateur spray job, but I can't say any more than that for sure! There's a bit of fretwear, but not enough to cause troubles with playability

Parts have arrived!

I have axesrus kluson-type tuners, wiring, and a new big-block bridge that'll go on my other strat, so the Squier bridge on that can come over to this one.

AND a set of Ironstone Silvers. They're not as fancy as the bareknuckles I'm used to but the basic construction is spot on so I'm hoping they'll sound just right.

Now I just have to find a cheap black scratchplate and work out what to do with the body

I'm getting very interested in this thread Sticky. One question is what is the brand of big-block bridge you've got? - I know you're not fitting it to the guitar in question, but I'm still curious! Also I will be interested to know how you find the Ironstones, and how they stack up against the Bare Knuckles. Obviously I wouldn't expect them to compete on a par with the BK's, but I do wonder what your impression will be in terms of what they can achieve for the low price. Hope you can find a good (inexpensive!) way of getting the body to look how you want it.

It's an axesrus own-brand, steel block one. I assume they've got a job lot from somewhere or other!

The block has square edges, so it's not vintage-accurate, but it's really nice and heavy and the plating looks good. I'll post a pic when I get a minute...

Done! It's hard to tell in the picture, but the saddles even have slight Vs in them to help the strings stay in the right place

Nice bit of kit you've got yourself there, well spotted! - they seem to have added these to their line only recently - but I think they will be selling quite a few somehow.

New black scratchplate has arrived from somewhere in Europe. The bulk of the wiring wiring should be done tonight, then I need to work out what to do with the body...

I do love the building process, there is something really great about all the various parts arriving from far flung places and coming together to form a guitar. Are you doing the Gilmour wiring thing BTW? Keen to see what you do with the body though - it's all sounding good anyway.
