Hi,

I am pretty new to the forum and also to playing, i brought a guitar package in november.

http://www.gear4music.com/Guitar-and-Bass/Electric-GB-Guitar-and-Complete-Pack-Sunburst/2E

And i really like the guitar although it makes a few Buzzing noises and i suspect the neck isnt "true" or some frets need dressing as they are too high.

The question i want to ask is should i pay someone to sort this out or buy a new guitar? i am only thinking of spending £200-£300 max or of course paying for the one i have to be sorted out. Any recomendations?

if i went for the buying option it would possibly be something like this:-

Unless it’s a stated selling point, you can expect any guitar to need some adjustment straight out of the box. Spending more money does not automatically equate to getting a ‘better’ instrument. Are you close enough to G4M to ask them to look at it – which they probably wouldn’t charge for.

Exactly as Surfsilver says: your guitar probably was probably not properly set up in the first place.

Look at the yellow box on the right, here ----------->
... where you can see what Richard does for £55. I can vouch for his good work, having had 3 Guitars set up by him.

have a go at setting it up yourself, all you want is a £2.50 set of allen keys from Homebase

No i am not close to gear 4 music so would be a fair treck to get the guitar back to them or some heavy postage, the same with richard although from what i see on here his work is highly recomended. I have made enquirys with a local guitar shop who will do a complete set up for £60.

Maybe stupidly i was assuming that as it was a "low end" guitar it would be used making cheaper components and then maybe not up to the job etc... although saying that the own brand gear for music stuff appears to get good reviews on value for money and i do like it and i am sure once the "buzzing" around the 4th to 7th frets is cured ill like it even more ... maybe i have just answered my own question there??

As for setting it up myself mmm i think there may have to be a lot of googling before i do that

you should have a go yourself,it's simple stuff and if you're not happy with the result then go and pay someone else to do it..

here's the first setting up guitar vid I found on youtube

What strings are buzzing between the 4th and 7th frets?
Is it all the strings or just the higher pitched strings?
Is it just the lower pitched strings?

My first thought hearing that you're getting buzz around a certain area of the neck is that the neck relief is not set correctly.
To rectify that would involve finding the truss rod and adjusting it accordingly.
You'll need an allen key for that and you'll only want to turn that truss rod a quarter turn maximum
either clockwise or anti-clockwise but whichever way you turn it you will see the results for yourself immediately and you will notice the effect that action has on the buzzing of the strings.
Truss rods tend to settle quite a bit after they've been adjusted though so I would recommend turning it a maximum of a quarter turn then letting it settle overnight and checking again before thinking the job was done.

Fair point i might have a little "dabble" with it and if it doesnt go well i can still pay the money and take it in to get it sorted out by someone who knows what they are doing.

Any definate No no's so that i dont ensure that the repair bill is a little more than i first thought?

Yes i have done some online reading before and thought the truss rod might need moving a little. it is yes pretty much between the 4th and 7th frets on the lower pitch strings the higher pitch appear to be ok

Hi
I'm in Kent...although it's a big place, if you're near i can set it up for you.
I build Guitars from scratch as a hobby and do occcasional repairs/setups etc.

It does sound as though it may simply be a case of truss-rod adjustment. Too much relief and you may get the problems you have described.

If you're really not happy with the guitar, send it back...they should re-imburse you any postage.

Good luck. Mike

check that one out too

just don't go mad and you won't do any damage, make sure the allen key is sat well into the truss rod before you apply pressure, you will need to give it some force to turn it so expect to do that but don't overdo it obviously.
Don't turn the allen key more than a quarter of a full rotation, start off with 1/8th of a turn and see what happens, before you start stand upright and place the guitar on the floor resting against your leg so you can look down the neck, have a good look and see if it all looks parrallel and straight to you or if it looks 'off' anywhere. Then you'll know what you want to happen when you turn the truss rod.If it looks like it's going to be worse then maybe you're turning the truss rod the wrong way,if that happens go back the same distance you turned it and start again going in the othger direction.use small steps and take constant readings/judgements as to what's happening, you'll get it right

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yg2w_usINTs

it'll give you a buzz to sort it yourself as well
\:\)
if it works ok you can send me the £60

\:\) \:\) \:\)

my instinct tells me it will want to go an eighth of a turn clockwise looking down the neck towards the body but I don't know your guitar so really should keep my trap shut lol
