Thanks for all the suggestions. 213 is a much easier fingering that 123. I think I will give up on 123 for the time being as it annoys me.

Ape - that's a good trick. I can barre D, G and B with 1 and still get the E to ring if I'm careful. It does feel a bit weird though!

and you have 3 fingers free too!

one of the first tunes I learned to play, still a classic

I don't play my pinky on the low E like that though,I just mute the low E with my thumb and let the open A ring

Being fairly new to the guitar I would suggest you use a fingered A (eg. 213, 123) as your regular A but it would be worth getting used to that weird feeling of the barred A (with either the 1st or 3rd fingers) as this will open up all sorts of possibilities as you progress.

Everyone's fingers are different, so experiment to find out what works for you. You could try 2,3,4 instead of 1,2,3. This will help when adapting it to a barre chord -- using 1 for the barre. E.g., a Bb or B chord.

Some people fret all three strings with the same finger -- a sort of mini-barre. This is like an A7 but leaving the high E-string open.

As your fingertips harden up and you get raised pads of skin, you'll find chords get easier.

I also think using 234 for chords makes it a lot easier when you start playing barre chords. Plus 234 takes up marginally less room on the fretboard.

Not intending to hijack this thread, but does anyone play a 6-string D chord (or D/F# to be precise) like this:

Finger 1 - E string - Fret 2
Open A string
Open D string
Finger 2 - G string - Fret 2
Finger 4 - B string - Fret 3
Finger 3 - E string - Fret 2

Seems fairly easy, but for some reason I've never seen it written down. For years I've used my thumb for the low F# (very ugly!). The other day I thought why not do it as above? (Maybe I'm just a slow learner.)

OK. That's A maj sorted out. Now I need to get my strength up for C maj without resting 3rd on the D string.

I nearly traded my piano in yesterday but then played it for a bit and decided I didn't want to get rid after all. Luckily there is only enough room for 1 (ok.. 2 if you count the electric piano).. maybe I will get addicted to Guitars and end up with hundreds of them instead... \:D
