I believe the early charvel model series and similar era Jacksons had active boosts not active pickups..
This is what I found out when I looked up the OP's guitar too- switchable active mid-boost circuit on a pot and passive HSS pickups with individual on/off switches, equivalent to the Jackson Soloist from the same period, but not the current Soloist, which is a 2HB configuration.

Well TBH for looks I like shark fin inlays the bound wider fret board and through neck with 24 frets is a must for the sustain! I remember playing my model 6 for only a few weeks and my playing went significantly better, my alternate picking was as fast as my economy picking which was down to me not hitting the strings as hard, my sweeping arpeggios were smooth and easy all because the guitar was so much more powerful and better suited to the way I held and play the guitar "fingers vertical style"!! No string pull either unlike my strat, the notes just went on like a tuning fork!! After that I then I ended up never playing the strat or the gibson as they just didnt cut it for me. I bought a Jackson soloist which was another fantastic shred guitar. But anyway my budget is say £600, what would you recommend I go and play at a guitar store?
Many thanks for taking the time to write.
Steve.

If you can find an ltd M-1000 or similar speced feeling guitar, you may not get Sharkfins at that price I dont know, I owned an SLS-3 and an SL2H the sl2h was ok but the finishing wasent that good compared to the sl2h or the M-1000..
Neck through isnt a garauntee of more sustain, any good playing guitar will sustain well, why else would suhr and other high end makers use bolt ons predominantly...
I would definately check out the current charvel socals they cna be had for £600 odd you may prefer the mid 80's stylings they have like the non recessed floyd...
You might be better off upping your budget and just getting a used sl1 or sl2h I bought mine new for £1300odd granted that took months to pay off but thats not the point...you really can snag some rediculous deals right now...
A better guitar is only going to inspire you even more than a medicore to good guitar will a brilliant one will just keep you hooked...
FYI Jackson still make H-s-s soloists but they no longer use the jackson pickups for non customs/one offs the SL1/T has a Jb and two duncan stacks in the middle/neck, and the SL-3 was H-s-s newer versions have better pickups and a Korean made FRT-1000 bridge as used on the charvels...
It's never an easy decision, but im sure you will find something the current model 6 prices are a bit steep for what they are infact with inflation they me be more than they were new which is silly...
Do you have specific requirements for the pickups or are you happy with at least one humbucker?
I personally need a humbucker in the neck for sweeping and smoother sounds, but im not really a single coil player and never have liked them...
BC Rich may have one model to suit I know they had a superstrat with neckthrough ofr and twin emg 81's a few years back along with their other well priced guitars...

Wow!! I like the look of the M1000, how old are they or how long have they been available? You could have just swayed me there!! Thanks alot. MH is arched M is flatop and more like the dinky/soloist shapes.
Also mahogany wings rather than alder, the block inlays are more subtle, however the arrowheads on the M-1000 are nice and not too ott, the purfing however is a bit much...it works on the plain black finish of the original m-1000's
but they will play very similar excellent quality as they are made in the world factory in korea, and have great work, neck shape may be thicker on the mh too, im not sure...
Did you win the auction if so you got a great price...

No I didnt bid on it, I wanted to speak to you first before I bid as dont know any thing about the MH1000 or in fact ESP guitars period. But there will be others I'm sure. I like the reverse head stock look so am definitely going to search for the M1000. There is one for sale in the states for £600 delivered to the UK but knowing my luck I'd get hit with import duty so not sure if I should buy it. Thanks for helping me out!!

You can find one over here for cheaper than that I dont dislike the newer models paint etc is the same however the black nickel hardware can corrode really quickly, depending on who makes it..
The first run had german made floyds theres probably not a major difference, but the ofr's are bombproof and will last a lifetime, these cheaper korean and chinese versions, have poorer metals so probably wont last as long...
I think other than the mh being arched, or carved, and the mahogany it's a similar guitar The standard m-1000 is more of a standard shred guitar and the necks on them are very very nice...
