Bry,
I applied some Wickes own brand dark oak stain to my strat body last night and it's still hanging up to dry now.
It looks a bit patchy though,do you reckon it would be ok to give it anther coat of the stain or would you recommend sanding it back a bit first?

I would think it'd be fine to give it another coat, I often only leave it an hour or so, but leave it to dry well before applying any oil if you're doing that.

There was a spot of glue on it that I didn't remove before I stained it so I need to re-sand to wood and try again.

Not yet. The body was nearly done but seemed to be getting lighter so after about 20 coats of oil I've started adding more woodstain to try and darken it. Dont know if it's going to work and I'm out of oil now but by the time some more arrives it should have had plenty of time to dry.

So you're applying more dark oak stain directly on top of the existing tru-oil finish?

I hope that goes ok for you what with all the hours you've put in to get it this far, I guess maybe all the oil layers were reflecting the light in such ways as to make it appear lighter or something.

Maybe I will go for 2 coats of stain on my projects before I start on the oil myself then.

Any chance of a few pics to we can see more clearly what you mean?

I've been rubbing it down with synthetic wire wool after each 3 - 4 coats of oil, maybe I was taking off more than I was adding. I've given it a coat of dark oak and a coat of ebony to get it looking as dark as before.

You've given the entire guitar an ebony stain now?

It looks ok from the pic anyway,how is the stain and the previous oil coat reacting to each-other,ok?
